Microsoft, Panasonic Sign exFAT IP Licensing Deal

Microsoft and Panasonic on Thursday signed an intellectual property licensing agreement that covers Microsoft's extended file allocations table (exFAT) technology.

Under the deal, Panasonic will have access to exFAT file system technology, which is designed to handle rich audio/media files and provide more seamless data portability across various electronic devices, Microsoft said.

The exFAT licensing program started in December, and companies like Olympus and Sanyo have since signed on.

"Microsoft's exFAT file system technology is designed to enhance multimedia experiences for consumers, which is especially important as televisions and other consumer electronic devices are moving far beyond traditional media content," David Kaefer, general manager of IP licensing at Microsoft, said in a statement. "This agreement with Panasonic is the most recent example of our commitment to licensing cutting-edge intellectual property to drive innovation across the industry."

The news comes several days after Microsoft signed a deal with Amazon under which both companies will have access to each other's patent portfolio.
