Intel's forum signals market shift from PC to mobile devices

Part of IDF was upstaged by Apple's iPhone 5 launch, but Intel stuck to the message that it remains relevant

This year's Intel Developer Forum was upstaged by Apple's iPhone 5 launch event, which to some show attendees felt like a reprise of last year, when IDF had to compete with Microsoft's Build conference.

Apple's event dominated the second day of IDF, with many attendees and press talking about the merits and drawbacks of the iconic smartphone rather than news from Intel. The company's jovial software chief, Renee James, joked about being the "opening act" for Apple in her speech soon before the iPhone event started.

To some analysts and attendees, the clash between events this year was indicative of the industry shift from PCs, which is dominated by Intel, to mobile devices such as smartphones, where Intel is still trying to make its presence felt. Sales of PCs are fading as users turn to smartphones and tablets as alternatives.

Attendance at IDF this year was up slightly to 4,100 compared to 4,000 last year, according to an Intel spokeswoman, with those at the forum hearing about the new Haswell chip, the future of ultrabooks, and other emerging server, storage and networking technologies. Some found the conference useful as it offered sales leads and a chance to network.

Intel will remain relevant, especially with Microsoft's Windows 8 OS coming up, but this year it's at a crossroads with the market shifting and PC sales declining, said David Kanter, who runs the technology consulting firm Real World Technologies.

"This IDF was unique because you have an opportunity to contrast next door the iPhone 5 launch. In some ways that embodies the shift in the industry," Kanter said. "We have these new classes of devices emerging and there is some financial tension there."

But some attendees were disappointed with IDF.

"It's not been the best IDF. We've been coming to these events for many, many years. Seems like more Intel, less customers," said Stephen Gentile, senior vice president for strategy and business development at Insyde Software, which offers PC, server and tablet firmware and software development tools.

However, Insyde is a key partner for Intel, so the company decided to attend. The company has yet to decide whether it will attend again next year.

There was not much foot traffic at a booth for storage company Virident, which was staffed by inside sales manager Constantine Tikhoniouk. But he found there were other reasons to attend IDF.

"It's more of a forward-thinking conference than going after existing technologies. From that perspective it is very useful," Tikhoniouk said.

The show was surprisingly light on smartphones and tablets, with the focus squarely on ultrabooks, an emerging category of thin-and-light PCs with tablet features. Intel talked about new hybrid ultrabook models in which screens can be detached to become tablets, and new forms of touch, gesture and voice interaction with ultrabooks. Intel's message was clear -- ultrabooks are multifaceted devices that can be powerful laptops, but also tablets for those who desire mobility.

Intel also shed light on its upcoming Haswell chips, which will double performance while cutting power consumption to improve battery life on ultrabooks. Company executives in interviews also said they weren't happy with "good enough computing," possibly aiming at ARM, whose processors go into most tablets and smartphones. Intel offers more performance but lags ARM on power consumption, and the company hopes to catch up with its rival via advances in its manufacturing process.

Tablets and phones are becoming more powerful, but Intel has shown it has the capability to reduce power consumption on chips through Haswell. Intel is aware the industry is shifting and will move with it, Kanter said.

"Naturally, Intel would like that to shift back as they come out with more mobile devices and get into the cellphone space and tablets in a more serious way," Kanter said.

The progress on Haswell could reflect on Intel smartphone and tablet chips going into the future, said Jack Gold, principal analyst at J. Gold Associates.

"I wouldn't rule out mobiles. In fact, I estimate Intel will have a 10% market share in smartphones within two to three years, given its push towards lower power and the porting of Android to its chips," Gold said.

Intel has the advantage in process technology that should keep it highly competitive in the mobile space, Gold said.

But Intel's sheer dominance of the PC market continues to create business opportunities for On Semiconductor, which supplies power components to chip and board makers. The company has to advance and spread awareness about its technology as Intel makes chips smaller and more power efficient, and also needs to find new opportunities and contacts, said Mikhail Guz, senior director of low-voltage MOSFET BU at On Semiconductor.

"I think [IDF] may be a little lighter on traffic, I don't know if it's a sign of the times," Guz said. "But for the composition of attendees, it's relevant."

Why you shouldn't train employees for security awareness

If there's one myth in the information security field that just won't die, it's that an organization's security posture can be substantially improved by regularly training employees in how not to infect the company. But do phishing attacks like RSA prove that employee training is a must, or just the opposite? If employees and/or executives at RSA, Google, eBay, Adobe, Facebook, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and other technologically sophisticated organizations can be phished, doesn't that suggest that even knowledgeable and trained people still fall victim to attacks?

One of the best examples ever of the limitations of training is West Point's 2004 phishing experiment called "Carronade." Cadets were sent phishing emails to test their security. Even after undergoing four hours of computer security training, 90 percent of cadets still clicked on the embedded link.

Fundamentally what IT professionals are saying when they ask for a training program for their users is, "It's not our fault." But this is false—a user has no responsibility over the network, and they don't have the ability to recognize or protect against modern information security threats any more than a teller can protect a bank. After all, is an employee really any match against an Operation Shady RAT, Operation Aurora or Night Dragon? Blaming a high infection rate on users is misguided— particularly given the advanced level of many attacks.

I'll admit, it's hard to find broad statistical evidence that supports this point-of-view—not surprisingly, security firms don't typically share data on how successful or unsuccessful training is to an organizational body, the way West Point did. But I can share a few anecdotes from my company's own consulting work that should shed some light on this problem.

The clients we typically consult with are large enterprises in financial services or manufacturing. All of them have sophisticated employee awareness and security training programs in place—and yet even with these programs, they still have an average click-through rate on client-side attacks of at least 5 to 10 percent.

We also frequently conduct social engineering attacks against help desks and other corporate phone banks for customers. While each of the personnel in these security sensitive rolls has extensive training and are warned against social engineering attacks, the only thing that stops our testers are technical measures. In other words, if a help desk employee can technically change your password without getting a valid answer from you about your mother's maiden name, then a company like Immunity will find a way to convince them to do so.

We've also found glaring flaws—like SQL injection, cross-site scripting, authentication, etc.—in the training software used by many clients. This is more humorous than dangerous, but it adds irony to the otherwise large waste of time these applications represent.

Instead of spending time, money and human resources on trying to teach employees to be secure, companies should focus on securing the environment and segmenting the network. It's a much better corporate IT philosophy that employees should be able to click on any link, open any attachment, without risk of harming the organization. Because they're going to do so anyway, so you might as well plan for it. It's the job of the CSO, CISO, or IT security manager to make sure that threats are stopped before reaching an employee—and if these measures fail, that the network is properly segmented to limit the infection's spread.

Here's what organizations should do instead of wasting time on employee training:

Audit Your Periphery — Websites, back-end databases, servers and networks should be thoroughly audited on a regular basis for vulnerabilities&msdash;both by internal security personnel and external pen-testers. They should be rigorously tested against current and most likely attacks. Had Citigroup's website been tested for basic web application flaws, it could have avoided the June 2011 attack that compromised 200,000 customer accounts. This is both cheap and easy to take off the table.
Perimeter Defense/Monitoring — Robust perimeter defenses should be in place, and regularly tested. These should be protecting the network from both intrusions and data exfiltration. Data exfiltration monitoring should also be ongoing.
Isolate & Protect Critical Data — What valuable information does your business store in online databases? Classifying business data should be near the top of the CSO/CISO's to-do list. He or she should thoroughly examine the information stored online and locate critical data offline or behind strict network segmentation.
Segment the Network — Segment your networks and information so that a successful cyber attack cannot spread laterally across the entire network. Had RSA done this, it might have prevented the theft of its SecurID tokens. If one employee's PC is infected it shouldn't be able to spread laterally through the entire system.
Access Creep —What level of access does each employee have to the network and critical data? How well is this monitored? Limiting unnecessary access is another key element of an effective security posture.
Incident Response — Proactively examine important boxes for rootkits. You'll be amazed at what you find. And finding is the first step to actually building a defense against "Advanced Persistent Threats."
Strong Security Leadership — For a company to have a CSO/CISO isn't enough. The chief security executive should have meaningful authority too. He or she should have "kill switch" authority over projects that fail to properly account for security, and real say over security's percentage of the budget. A strong security program should have at least the same budget as the marketing department.

There's a lot of money and good feeling in running employee training programs, but organizations will be much better off if the CSO/CISO focuses instead on preventing network threats and limiting their potential range. Employees can't be expected to keep the company safe; in fact it is just the opposite. Security training will lead to confusion more than anything else.

By following an offensive security program, companies can keep their networks, and employees, protected.

Google's new IaaS cloud boasts strong compute performance but lacks the breadth of features in Amazon Web Services' Elastic Compute Cloud, according to one industry analyst's side-by-side comparison of the services.

Google has said it uses Intel Sandy Bridge processors and that each unit of its Compute Engine delivers performance matching that of at least a 1.0- to 1.2-GHz 2007 Opteron chip. Other media have reported that Google uses 2.6-GHz processors, which leads Gaun to believe the company has Xeon E5-2670 chips, the only ones on the market at the time of Google's announcement that deliver that level of raw compute power.

Gaun believes Google is running the high-capacity chip across its cloud infrastructure, while Amazon makes it available in certain instance types for Elastic Compute Cloud customers, including in its recently announced high I/O extra large cluster compute offering. "Google seems to be running only the latest and greatest chips on the market, while Amazon has a wide variety of chips for customers to use," Gaun says.

Amazon isn't standing pat either. AWS on Wednesday, for example, announced the ability to set the input/output operations per second (IOPS) in Elastic Block Storage.

There are other differences between Google Compute Engine, which is still in limited preview mode, and Amazon cloud compute services, which the company launched in 2006 and made generally available in 2008. AWS has 14 different sizes of compute instances, ranging from small virtual machines with 1.7GB of memory, to extra-large compute clusters with 60.5GB of memory, whereas Google has only four. Google also makes the fiber-optic links between its own data centers available to cloud customers. AWS has a variety of accommodating features in its cloud though, such as the EBS volumes, relational database services, load balancers and others.

The two companies are appealing to different customers, Gaun says. While AWS is targeting technology-reliant businesses that are turning to the cloud to host their websites, databases and storage, Google is focused initially on research and development teams that may have a need for high-performance computing to complete a project, for example. The strategy is seen in the pricing models: AWS offers reserved instance pricing discounts, in which customers agree to use a compute instance for months or even years. Google's cloud is priced by smaller time chunks and therefore aimed at shorter-lived projects.

Gaun says if Google wants to compete in a broader market with Amazon, it will likely have to offer a discounted pricing option for long-term use. That may come in time, Gaun predicts, given that the company's cloud computing offering isn't even generally available yet.

Tiny server offers modular design

Xi3 Corporation announced a 4-inch, "eco-friendly" server it claims will be readily upgradeable, thanks to the use of one board containing the processor and memory and two separate boards containing I/O ports. The "microServ3r" apparently offers a choice of AMD processors, SSD (solid state disk) storage, two gigabit Ethernet ports, two eSATA ports, and a Fibre Channel port.
A Jan. 25 press release from Utah-based Xi3 relates how the company showed off its microServ3r -- originally announced last November -- at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this month. We missed seeing this product in person, so it's well worth taking a look at it now.

In fact, the microServ3r isn't yet shipping, nor are details of the product yet available on the company's website. But a video posted by Xi3 makes clear that the device is an evolution of the Xi3 Modular Computer, a mini-PC that was first announced in Nov. 2010 and shipped in the second half of 2011. (See later in this story for background.)

Instead of the single Ethernet port on the standard Modular Computer, the microServ3r will apparently include two Ethernet ports and a Fibre Channel port. It will also sport HDMI and DisplayPort video outputs, four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, and two eSATA ports, or so the video (embedded later below) suggests.

Xi3 hasn't said what CPU the microServ3r will employ, but a ZDNet UK report suggests it will be the same AMD Athlon X2 3400e (1.8GHz) that's already featured on the Modular Computer. Clearly, the device's metallic, 4 x 3.66 x 3.66-inch case will be identical as well.

Xi3 announced in 2010 that its Modular Computer uses a design protected by six different U.S. patents, three of which had been only recently issued. The patents were said to have been licensed to Xi3 by the holding company Isys Technologies, which has been working on the computer's design since at least 2008 (as its various YouTube videos demonstrated).

Jason Sullivan, identified as both founder and CEO of Isys Technologies and president and CEO of Xi3 Corporation, stated at the time, "We reject the concept that computers should have a useful life of only two to four years. Instead we believe that computers should be upgradeable and updateable over and over and over again, and that's how we've designed the Xi3 Modular Computer, making it (potentially) the last computer you ever need to buy."

It was claimed that the Modular Computer will resist obsolescence because instead of using a single motherboard, it employs three boards. One of these (below middle) houses the processor and RAM, while two additional boards (below left and right) handle connectivity and I/O.

Presumably, then, Modular Computers -- and microServ3rs, too -- will be able to gain faster CPUs in the future by snapping in an upgraded processor board, though Xi3 made no specific promise to offer these. (Having encountered such schemes in the past, we're bound to point out that they all foundered for one of two reasons: Either the vendor failed to provide the upgrade boards that were promised, or technology simply outstripped whatever interconnect was being used.)

Xi3 provided few details of its interconnect but did say that it carries PCI Express signals, among others. The Modular Computer also has a wealth of standard, PC-style ports, as seen in the picture earlier in this story, including DVI-I and DisplayPort video outputs.

Xi3 says the Modular Computer has six USB 2.0 ports with Type A connectors, along with two eSATA connectors. The device's rear panel also includes a gigabit Ethernet port and 3.5mm audio jacks (headphones, mic in, and line in), according to the company.

The Modular Computer is said to use AMD's 780E northbridge and SB710 southbridge, the latter mounted on a separate board from the processor so as to ease I/O upgrades. Processor choices, meanwhile, can be either a dual-core, 1.8GHz AMD Athlon X2 3400e, or a single-core, 1GHz AMD Athlon XP 2000+, says Xi3.

According to Xi3, cooling of the Modular Computer is aided by its aluminum case and flow-through design. However, the device is apparently not fanless, Xi3 making reference to an internal fan connector.

Noting that the Modular Computer comes with 2GB or 4GB of RAM, Xi3 adds that the device employs SSD (solid state disk) storage, in capacities ranging from 16GB to 128GB. The system is compatible with both Windows and Linux, according to the company.

From promoting and education the industry on the merits of Ethernet in the service provider network, to actually defining carrier-class Ethernet specifications, the MEF has been at the forefront of advances in the technology on a larger-than-enterprise-network scale. Ethernet switching gets specialized

Dell'Oro Group says Ethernet growth will be spurred by data center, other specific requirements

Growth in the Ethernet switch market is now being driven by specialized devices for specific applications, rather than evenly across all customer deployments.

These are the findings of market researcher Dell'Oro Group, which noted that growth in the market from 2003 to 2008 was across all segments -- low-end unmanaged switches, mid-range fixed PoE devices and high-end modular systems. The market nearly doubled in that time period, from $10.7 billion to $18.5 billion.

But since the market recovered in 2010 from the recession of 2008-2009, it shifted toward a single segment of customer deployment: the data center.

"We believe this shift to be a fundamental transition and we predict that products deployed in the data center will be the growth engine of the Ethernet switch market over the next few years," Dell'Oro said in a statement. "We see intelligence moving back from the edge and into the data center core for easier management particularly as enterprises virtualize and outsource to the cloud."

The shift has significant ramifications for Ethernet switching vendors, Dell'Oro asserts. With the migration in the data center toward 10 Gigabit Ethernet for server access, vendors are coming out with unique products optimized for those, and other specific deployments.

Vendor market shares will be affected by these disparate requirements, and many will be forced to specialize in only certain deployment locations or partner with other vendors to offer customers complete Ethernet switching portfolios, Dell'Oro says.

"Manufacturers can no longer develop a switch for one customer deployment location and modify it into a second location and expect success," the firm states.

And vendors that currently have more exposure in the data center will likely increase their Ethernet switch market share as the overall market becomes more data center focused, Dell'Oro notes.

The Layer 2/3 data center switching market grew just under 6% from 2010 to 2011, to $6.6 billion, according to Dell'Oro. The top three vendors were Cisco, HP and Dell.

The entire Layer 2/3 Ethernet switch market was $19.8 billion in 2011, essentially flat with 2010 but up 31% from 2009, according to Dell'Oro.

LifeSize unveils all-in-one HD videconferencing units

Logitech unit pushes easy set-up of units for home and executive offices and meeting rooms

Computerworld - LifeSize on Tuesday unveiled two portable, all-in-one videoconferencing units for various work spaces, including home offices, meeting rooms and executive offices.

The Unity 50 is a tabletop or wall-mounted unit with a 24-in. LED display with 720p HD resolution combined with camera, microphone, speakers and endpoint technology.

The Unity 50 is priced at $3,999.

A LifeSize touch-panel IP desktop phone is included with the Unity 500 to help users set up videoconference calls and to provide audio calling.

Competitors Cisco and Polycom also offer all-in-one units, but Michael Helmbrecht GM of video at LifeSize, a division of Logitech, contended that Unity products are less expensive and easier to set up and move.

He called the new Unity products a move up in quality from older LifeSize products.

He said the portable design makes videoconferencing far more practical and affordable than the typical installation of a telepresence studio for more than $200,000 in a corporate conference room.

"These are fast to deploy an easy to use," Helmbrecht said. "If a customer needs to re-deploy a unit when an office is no longer used, you just move it."

The LifeSize products interoperate with videoconferencing products, including call management software, from competitors.

The new Unity series will provide other model sizes and variations in future releases, Helmbrecht said.

Austin-based LifeSize has 500 employees, 3,000 resellers and serves customers in 80 countries, he added.

The Unity series is an example of a trend that has videoconferencing vendors "shooting for ease of use and ease of installation," said Henry Dewing at Forrester Research.

"These vendors will set these up at trade shows and have a race to see who can set up the fastest," Dewing said. "A sub-10 minute set-up is not unusual."

The Unity series is a move in the "right direction" for LifeSize, he added, noting that the smaller Unity 50 is a convenient desktop unit that can serve as a second monitor on person's desk when not used for videoconferencing.

Computerworld - The upcoming shift from Double Data Rate 3 (DDR3) RAM to its successor, DDR4, will herald in a significant boost in both memory performance and capacity for data center hardware and consumer products alike.

The DDR4 memory standard, which the Joint Electronic Devices Engineering Council (JEDEC) expects to OK this summer, represents a doubling of performance over its predecessor and a reduction in power use by 20% to 40% based on a maximum 1.2 volts of power use.

"It's a fantastic product," said Mike Howard, an analyst with market research firm IHS iSuppli. "Increasing the amount of memory and the bandwidth of that memory is going to have huge implications."

DDR4's significant reduction in power needs means that relatively low-priced DDR memory will, for the first time, be used in mobile products such as ultrabooks and tablets, according to Howard.

Today, mobile devices use low-power DDR (LPDDR) memory, the current iteration of which uses 1.2v of power. The next generation of mobile memory, LPDDR3, will further reduce that power consumption (probably by 35% to 40%), but it will likely cost 40% more than DDR4 memory, said Howard. (LPDDR memory is more expensive to manufacture.)
Designed for servers

The impact that DDR4 will have on the server market could be even greater.

Intel, for example, is planning to start using DDR4 in 2014, but only in server platforms, according to Howard. "Server platforms are the ones really screaming for this stuff, because they need the bandwidth and the lower voltage to reduce their power consumption.

"So while Intel is only supporting DDR4 on their server platforms in 2014, I have a feeling they're going to push it to their compute platforms as well in 2014," Howard continued.

The draft of the DDR4 specification and its key attributes were released last August.

"With DDR4, we're certainly ... seeing some larger power savings advantages with the performance increase," said Todd Farrell, director of technical marketing for Micron's DRAM Solutions Group.

Both Samsung and Micron have announced they're preparing to ship memory modules based on the DDR4 standard. Samsung's memory modules, expected to ship later this year, purport to reduce power use by up to 40%. Both companies are using 30-nanometer circuitry to build their products, their smallest to date.

By employing a new circuit architecture, Samsung said its DDR4 modules will be able to perform operations at speeds of up to 3.2Gbps, compared with today's DDR3 speeds of 1.6Gbps and DDR2's speeds of up to 800Mbps.

Another benefit from the arrival of DDR4 will be greater density and the ability to stack more chips atop one another. Micron's DDR4 memory module is expected to ship next year, but test modules have already shipped to system manufacturers.

"For DDR3, we see stacking going up to four chips (4H), [but] for DDR4 this clearly will go up to eight chips stacked on top of each other (8H), which means that, using a 16Gbit memory [chip], manufacturers will be able to produce 128Gbit memory boards," Farrell said.

Farrell described the jump from DDR3 to DDR4 as greater than any other past DDR memory evolution.

"It's hard to pick just one [attribute]. DDR4 is one of these devices where you're getting a lot of benefits at once. Power reduction is key. But at the same time we're reducing power, we're getting a substantial increase in performance. They kind of go hand in hand," Farrell said.

For example, if you run DDR4 at the same bandwidth as DDR3, you can achieve a 30% to 40% power savings. Running at its maximum bandwidth, which represents a doubling of performance, DDR4 will use the same power as its predecessor.
Does power improvement matter?

Historically, memory power consumption has not been considered a big issue because at the motherboard level, processors were responsible for most of the power use in a system.

"Moving forward, as we see a tremendous amount of power reduction -- especially in tablets -- at that point, if the memory power doesn't reduce with it ... all of a sudden the memory is setting your battery life," Farrell said.

I/O signaling has been improved for added power savings. The I/O uses an "open drain" driver, meaning it only uses power when it writes a zero and not a one at the data bit level. Previous DDR memory used power when writing both zeros and ones.

"Our DRAM controller doesn't drive current to a one," Farrell said.

Another power-saving feature with the DDR4 standard will be a reduction in refreshes. In DDR3 memory boards, refreshes occur periodically -- and more frequently as the temperature of a device rises. DDR4 memory is being tuned to take advantage of mobile device cooling capabilities. For example, as mobile devices like tablets and laptops go into sleep mode, they cool off. As they cool, DDR4 memory modules will refresh less often, thus using less power.

Additionally, DDR4 can be optimized for server use. For example, higher reliability can be configured using a Cyclic Redundancy Check for the data bus to verify the integrity of the memory. The command address bus also has parity built directly into the DRAM module. Traditionally, parity was achieved through the use of a separate register or another chip on a buffer DIMM.
Memory prices plummet, then stabilize

Even as the arrival of DDR4 memory nears, prices for DRAM remain soft, though the market is expected to pick up steam this year.

Last year, IHS iSuppli reported there was an oversupply in the DRAM market as demand came in lower than expected.

ISuppli has released figures showing that DRAM pricing declined to its lowest point at the end of 2010, the latest period for which it has released data. In December 2010, the contract price for a 2GB DDR3 DRAM module stood at $21, less than half the $44.40 the same module cost just six months earlier.

The price dip isn't restricted to DDR3. Pricing for a DDR2 DRAM module dropped to $21.50 in December 2011, down from $38.80 in June 2010, according to iSuppli.

This year, iSuppli said it has a much more optimistic outlook for DRAM prices. "DRAM prices have stabilized (and look to stay firm), and the dynamic of the world economy looks much more positive in 2012," it stated in a report last month.

After seeing major price declines in 2011, memory manufacturers cut output, bringing supply more in line with demand.

"Prices have been essentially flat in the commodity memory market since December, specifically DDR3. It is really weird," Howard said, adding that market consolidation should help firm up memory prices this year.

For example, Japan's Elpida Memory filed for bankruptcy in February. This week reports circulated that Micron is in talks to acquire Elpida.

"So it looks like there is going to be some really meaningful consolidation in the industry, and that's pointing to a much better balance between supply and demand," Howard said. "We're anticipating prices for commodity products increasing in the second half of the year."

Hottest IT skill? Cybersecurity

Under a barrage of cyberattacks, U.S. companies are hiring more security engineers, analysts than ever before

Embattled by hactivists, cybercriminals and foreign rivals seeking to steal proprietary information, U.S. corporations are ramping up their hiring of cybersecurity experts, with open jobs reaching an all-time high in April.

The need for cybersecurity experts spans all industries, from financial services, manufacturing and utilities to healthcare and retail. Among the major U.S. companies trying to fill cybersecurity-related positions are Boeing, Baylor Health Care System, Verisign and Office Depot.

Cybersecurity jobs also are plentiful in the U.S. federal government market. For example, the Energy Department's Idaho National Lab is seeking a senior cybersecurity researcher to support its lead nuclear research and development facility.

The number of cybersecurity-related job openings listed on the Dice.com Web site for IT professionals rose significantly in April 2012 compared to a year ago. The biggest increase was for cybersecurity specialists, which rose 74% with 920 open job listings. U.S. companies also are hiring thousands of network security, information security and application security experts.

"Every year, threats go up, so every year companies increase investment in security,'' says Tom Silver, senior vice president of North America for Dice. "On Dice, information security jobs reached an all-time high last month ... Companies want security professionals to counter breaches and also anticipate gaps, suggesting measures to fill them. Protection is key.''

Several trends are driving the demand for cybersecurity experts. Companies have increasingly complex networks, more transactions to process, and more data than ever. They're using cloud applications such as Salesforce and Taleo, which extends their need for information security outside the perimeter of their networks. Additionally, they're dealing with a flood of user-owned mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

The cybersecurity skills needed three years ago compared to now "is a whole different ballgame," says Sudhir Verma, vice president of consulting services and project management at Force 3, a Crofton, Md., government contractor that is hiring several senior engineers, solutions architects and analysts for its security team.

"Three years ago, the iPad was not in play. Now we're hiring experts in our practice who understand the bring-your-own-device and consumerization trends,'' Verma says. ``Everything is in flux with the move to the cloud and mobile devices. It's no longer about managing firewalls for IT security. It's beyond that. It's about how to protect information in the enterprise in an environment that includes cloud applications and tablets.''

All of these trends are prompting CIOs and CISOs to hire experienced security professionals to safeguard their sensitive information. They are particularly concerned about protecting intellectual property from theft by government-sponsored hackers from countries such as China.

"There's certainly a great need in the market, with cybersecurity breaches costing U.S. companies upwards of $400 billion annually in intellectual property theft alone," says Don Hanson, senior vice president with Yoh, an IT staffing agency.

Hanson sees demand for developers who can build secure applications, network engineers with security certifications, and architects who understand how to secure systems and processes. He says there is also a need for IT professionals to be involved with security monitoring, information assurance and regulatory compliance.

"The biggest need is for folks that are working in security with cutting-edge technologies,'' Hanson says. "There are so many mobile devices out there, it's important to add the layer of mobile device management and to understand how that additional layer works."

Hanson says companies are looking to hire IT professionals with experience in security information event management, intrusion detection, data loss prevention and logging systems, as well as those with certifications related to ethical hacking and digital forensics. However, they prefer to hire IT professionals with a big-picture perspective on security issues rather than expertise in only one type of security device.

"It's not so much about any one technology or any one point product," Hanson says. "It's more about a holistic approach to security that companies are taking that includes their policies and assets across their entire information architecture."

The titles for open cybersecurity jobs vary, with the most popular being security engineers, security analysts and security architects. Other organizations favor the terms cybersecurity analysts and information assurance analyst.

"We're looking now for cybersecurity intelligence analysts and information assurance analysts who understand how to look at information not only from a technical and logical security standpoint, but who can relate that back to risk management and business process risk," says Jacob Braun, president and COO of Waka Digital Media Corp., a Boston-based IT security consulting firm. "We're looking for people who can look at attacks in progress and can find occurrences that are symptomatic of attacks and...can help mitigate potential for future attacks."

Most of these high-paying cybersecurity jobs are not for recent computer science graduates; instead companies are looking to hire IT professionals with five to 15 years of experience with security systems and processes as well as related certifications. "A cybersecurity analyst is someone who has nine to 15 years of professional experience, preferably has a master's degree and possesses a variety of information security certifications," Braun says. "Salary depends on geography and industry. It can range anywhere from $80,000 to $150,000. If an individual has a unique set of experience, it can be significantly higher, especially for consultants."

Last year, Unisys hired an IT security director and expanded its IT security staff. Now the company is looking for knowledge of security principals in all of its ongoing IT hires, including application developers and network engineers, says Unisys CISO Dave Frymier.

"The reason that senior application architects and senior network engineers have got to have security knowledge is because we want to bake security into the early parts of the development process," Frymier says. "I've interviewed several application architects who had sterling-looking resumes and when I asked them to describe an SQL injection attack, they couldn't do it. Needless to say, we didn't hire them."

Unisys has 15 cybersecurity professionals on staff out of an overall group of 150 IT professionals. Frymier said Unisys needs cybersecurity expertise in its IT architecture and IT operations.

"The breaches that are occurring are problems on the operational side," he explained. "Somebody who runs a security information and event management system has to have a lot of experience...so they can deal with the false positives. Those systems throw out literally gigabytes worth of data. You have to be able to filter through that and find the stuff that really shouldn't be there."

Demand for cybersecurity experts is expected to remain strong.

For example, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a Senate committee in April that cyberattacks are her No.1 concern. She said there is a shortage of cybersecurity experts to help federal agencies thwart cyberattacks, which exceeded 106,000 last year.

Cybersecurity jobs will likely continue increasing as organizations continue to expand their online businesses.

"There's a huge non-profit in New York City, a $700 million organization, that wants to double in size -- all through marketing on the Internet," Hanson says. "They need cybersecurity expertise on the architectural level and the programming level. They're going to certainly encounter new threats as they open up their network to a whole new function."

Additionally, companies are unlikely to outsource or offshore cybersecurity jobs, Frymier says.

"There has to be a braintrust inside the company who understands what information is important for the company to safeguard and who operates in the best interest of the company," Frymier says. "What you can't get from a consulting firm is an ongoing risk management perspective of: What information do I need to protect, who is trying to steal it from me, and what is the risk of a breach."
